The `Tibetization' of the South China Sea
Article Abstract:
China's continuous incursions on disputed territories in the South China Sea mark its ascendant attitude toward its neighbors. Its construction and expansion of structures at the Mischief Reef, an island claimed by the Philippines, provide strong proof of China's increasing assertiveness in the region. The Philippines' inability to defend its claims on the area and the Assn of South East Asian Nations' silence on the issue only compounds the matter. Moreover, China's actions show that its intentions can never be trusted by its neighbors.

Asia faces the same old worries

Despite Chinese President Jiang Zemin's assurance that China is a peace-loving country, its military might has been perceived by other governments as a vital factor in the region's security and stability.
